Time running out for San Diego flood victims applying for aid

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The deadline for people impacted by San Diego’s January storms to apply for financial assistance is fast approaching.

San Diegans have two weeks left to apply for funds to use for temporary lodging, basic home repairs and other expenses following the severe storm and flooding that struck the area from Jan. 21-23.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Friday the deadline to apply for financial assistance is April 19. Meanwhile, the deadline for flood victims to apply for property tax relief is April 10.

People are encouraged to file insurance claims for damage caused by the storm to their property, including homes and vehicles, before they apply for FEMA assistance.

There are three ways to apply: visit DisasterAssistance.gov, use the FEMA mobile app or call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362.

Deadline approaching for flood victims to get property tax relief

San Diegans who applied for FEMA assistance may be referred to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), which may help pay for losses not fully covered by insurance. You can apply in person at the SBA San Diego County Business Recovery Center at Southwestern College Higher Education Center, located at 880 National City Blvd. It’s open Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Businesses may borrow up to $2 million for any combination of property damage or working capital. Homeowners may borrow up to $500,000 to repair or replace their homes, and both homeowners and renters may borrow up to $100,000 to repair or replace personal property.
