Tigers CF Jones likely out for season

If the Detroit Tigers are to avoid finishing with the worst record in baseball, it appears they'll have to do it without one of their most promising players.

The club learned Saturday that starting center fielder JaCoby Jones' season is likely over. A CT scan revealed a wrist fracture, sustained when Jones was struck by a pitch in the series opener on Thursday. He'll be out at least six weeks.

"He's pretty disappointed. Really frustrated," manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters after Saturday's loss to the Kansas City Royals. "It's kind of an internal fracture inside the bone. We had to get a CT scan to find it. We knew he was hurting. It'll probably end his season."

Jones is batting a career-high .235 in 88 games this season. He hit .271 in May and .291 in June, after his season got off to a late start due to a shoulder injury sustained late in spring training cost him the first 12 games.

Jones, a career .211 hitter, has 11 home runs, 26 RBIs and 39 runs scored in 88 games. He also has seven steals in nine chances. Should his season indeed be over, the 27-year-old will finish tied for his career high in home runs, and will establish new marks for every number in his .235/.310/.430 slash line.

The Tigers ended Saturday at 35-79, two games behind Baltimore for the majors' worst record. Kansas City is the next-closest team, five games better than Detroit.
