Tigard woman creates a mini art museum in her front yard

(PORTLAND TRIBUNE) — When Carol Gifford retired in 2021 after spending 31 years in the marketing department at the Beaverton-headquartered Columbia Sportswear, she wanted something to occupy her time.

And while those Little Free Libraries kiosks that dot neighborhood sidewalks are nice — there are already two on Millen Drive, the Tigard street she lives on — she wanted to create a mini sidewalk museum.

So, along with the help of her husband, Chris Coplen, a contractor by trade, the pair set out to create just that.

“We used scrap wood and he had the latch. I went to TAP Plastics and got a remnant (for the clear door). I mean, the most money I spent was on the bag of concrete,” she said.

Thus was born the Museum of Millen Art — not to be confused with New York City’s Museum of Modern Art — with the street’s first display opening in October in front of her Millen Drive home.
