Tide light rail now free for fans going to Norfolk Tides home games

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — You can now ride to and from Norfolk Tides home baseball games for free on The Tide light rail.

The deal is good for all 75 of the Tides’ regular-season home games for those who show their game ticket, Hampton Roads Transit announced. HRT teamed up with the Tides and the City of Norfolk for the promotion. Fares are typically $2 per trip for adults and free for children.

The free rides started last July, but were only for certain Tides firework nights. HRT says it averaged nearly 2,800 riders for those nights.

The announcement comes just days before the Tides’ season opener on Friday at Harbor Park against Durham.

The free service starts two hours before and after each game, and the Tide drops fans off at the Harbor Park Station outside the park. Fans can also park for free at these four park-and-ride lots next to Tide stations and ride over:

  • Newtown Road Station, Newtown Road and Kempsville Road.

  • Military Highway Station, Curlew Drive and Corporate Boulevard.

  • Ballentine/Broad Creek Station, Ballentine Boulevard and I-264.

  • EVMC/Fort Norfolk Station, Brambleton and Colley Avenues. This location is available only for Saturday and Sunday games – parking is not allowed on weeknights.

Fans are also encouraged to use HRT’s bus and ferry services to get to the game and avoid congestion. Ferry service between Portsmouth and Harbor Park runs every 30 minutes an hour before and after the games.

The Tides are the defending Triple-A national champions and will feature a slew of top talent from the Orioles’ organization, highlighted by top-ranked prospect Jackson Holliday. Other members of the Orioles 40-man roster who’ll start with Norfolk include Heston Kjerstad, Bruce Zimmerman and Kyle Stowers.

The first pitch for Friday’s game is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
