Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park to be bought by Bowlero

Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park — the largest privately owned bowling center and second-largest bowling center in the country — is being sold to Bowlero.

On Thursday, the Strobl family, the majority owner of Thunderbowl Lanes since 1997, announced the change on Facebook.

Bowlero, now at the core of the multibillion-dollar industry, is the largest owner and operator of bowling entertainment centers, with over 350 bowling centers across the U.S. Bowlero also owns the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA).

According to the family's post on Facebook, closing of the transaction is expected in June.

Over the years, the 90-lane bowling alley hosted numerous collegiate and professional events weighty to the world of bowling, like the PBA World Series of bowling, the USBC Masters, and the NCAA Women's Finals.

Thunderbowl Lanes has hosted the PBA World Championship twice, bringing some of the world's best bowlers to Allen Park to face off for a tournament worth hundreds of thousands of dollars: during the competition's first year in 2009, as well as last month for its 15th year.

"For over the past 80 years , the Strobl family has been involved in all aspects of the bowling, starting in 1942 the Strobl family owned three bowling centers over the years and became the majority owners of Thunderbowl Lanes in 1997," the post said on Facebook. "The family would like to thank the bowling community, the City of Allen Park, the staff and the management of Thunderbowl lanes for all wonderful memories and we wish for many more to come with Bowlero."
