Three men hit by an SUV as they sat in front of a Raleigh home. One of them died.

A man died after the driver of an SUV lost control and hit him and two others sitting in front of a house on Poole Road early Thursday morning.

Demetrius Smith, 47, was one of three men in front of the house near where Poole meets New Bern Avenue east of downtown, according to Raleigh police. Police have not released the name of the other two men but said they were hospitalized.

Police say Jelson Molina Carbajal, 28, was driving a Ford Explorer. They charged Carbajal with several crimes, including driving while impaired, felony death by vehicle and driving without a license.

Police say Carbajal was driving east on New Bern Avenue at about 2:15 a.m. when he hit a curb as he attempted to turn onto Poole Road. Police say he overcorrected and traveled across Poole Road and along the sidewalk before hitting the three men.

Carbajal and another man sitting in the front seat of the Explorer were also hospitalized, police said.
