A driver traveling the wrong way on South Champion Avenue collided with a police cruiser near the intersection of South Champion Avenue and Stanley Avenue at 10:57 a.m., police said. South Champion Avenue is a one-way street on which vehicles travel north.

The driver continued to attempt to drive his disabled vehicle and eventually jumped out and tried to flee on foot, according to the police report. Prosecutors say that the driver was driving at "an incredibly high rate of speed" while under the influence. His driver's license was also suspended, according to prosecutors.

Police took the driver into custody on a charge of aggravated vehicular assault. Additional charges are pending, police said. At his hearing Thursday morning, prosecutors said that a grand jury will consider charges of felonious assault against a police officer.

The two officers and the driver were transported to Grant Medical Center. All three were in stable condition, police said Wednesday afternoon.
