Thousands of Starbucks-branded mug gift sets recalled due to laceration and burn hazards

GHENT, WV (WVNS) — A recall was issued for thousands of Starbucks-branded mug gift sets because of burn and laceration hazards.

The mugs were sold during the 2023 holiday season, and if the mugs are filled with very hot liquids or are microwaved, they can overheat and/or break.

The mug gift sets were sold from November 2023 through January 2024 for around $10, $13, or $20 depending on the gift set, and were sold nationwide through Nexcom and at Target and Walmart in-store and online.

Four gift sets are included in the recall: the Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug, Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug, Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug, and Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs.

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are 12 recorded incidents of mugs that overheated or broke. The incidents caused ten injuries, including nine severe burns and/or blisters on fingers and hands, as well as a cut finger. One of the incidents reportedly needed medical attention.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that anyone with mugs from the gift sets should stop using them. They can then be taken to where they were bought from or those who own the mugs can contact Nestlé USA for a refund.

Those who return the mugs to the store where they were bought can get a gift card or cash refund, or go to Nestlé USA’s Contact Us page, scroll down to “Leave Us a Message”, click “Complaint”, choose “Recall” from the drop-down menu, add a photo of the mug or the gift set identifier code, finish filling out the form, and hit send to see about getting a check from Nestlé USA. Receipts are not necessary to get a full refund.
