Thousands of motorcyclists expected at Spring Flood Run

Apr. 19—ST. PAUL — Motorcyclists have been active for months thanks to a mild winter, but thousands are expected to take the road along the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers for the

Spring Flood Run

on Saturday, April 19, 2024. Drivers are urged to be extra cautious this weekend on routes between the Twin Cities Metro Area and Winona.

Motorcycle fatalities in Minnesota have increased in recent years. In 2023, 69 people were killed in motorcycle crashes. Both drivers and riders play a role in making the Spring Flood Run a safe event, said Jay Bock, motorcycle safety coordinator for the Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center.

"Making smart choices can save lives," Bock said. "Deadly crashes are preventable, and drivers and riders should work together to make sure everyone can enjoy the event and make it home safely."

Law enforcement agencies in southeast Minnesota, along with Minnesota State Patrol troopers, will be out patrolling the area during the event to ensure a safe riding environment.

The Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center offers these safety tips:

Riders

* Be prepared for inattentive drivers by staying focused on riding, keeping your speed in check and maintaining a two-second following distance.

* Wear the gear. Motorcyclists should wear a DOT-approved helmet and brightly colored protective gear for visibility and protection.

* Ride sober. One-third of all motorcycle fatalities involve impaired riders.

Motorists

* Watch for motorcycles. Due to the smaller size of motorcycles, their speed and distance is more difficult to judge.

* Always look twice at intersections, while turning left or changing lanes.

* Give riders room by maintaining a three-second following distance and check blind spots.

* Pay attention and drive at safe speeds.
