3 QUESTIONS
...about the benefits of a nap
It’s National Napping Day. I asked my colleague Rachel Grumman Bender, one of our resident health editors, about the science behind a good nap.
Lily: What are the health benefits of napping?
Rachel: Beyond helping you feel less sleepy, a nap can boost memory and mood.
Lily: What’s the ideal length for a nap, and is there such a thing as napping for too long?
Rachel: Yep. Napping for more than 30 minutes can put your body into deep sleep and make you feel drowsy afterward. An expert told us this is called “sleep inertia.”
Lily: How can I create the right conditions for a nap?
Rachel: We asked a pro! The trick, he said, is to find a quiet, dark, comfortable spot. Even if you can’t fall asleep fully, just resting can still be relaxing.
