Terre Haute flag voting open, continues until May 5

Apr. 24—Ethan Page's quest to create a new flag to represent the city of Terre Haute is coming close to fruition.

Page, who created a Facebook page called "Terre Haute Flag" last Christmas, has attracted an equally passionate group of like-minded residents eager to participate.

He said he received 64 designs submitted by 37 different artists, and that the process is in the final stages of voting for the winning entry. By late Wednesday, a total of 1,239 had cast votes for their favorites at terrehauteflag.weebly.com/.

A panel joined Page to pare the entries down to five finalists.

"It was pretty difficult to narrow down the designs because we had a lot of great designs to choose from," he said. "So we based our choices on ... strong Terre Haute symbolism that our city has pride in and strong standards [based on the historical study of flags] that insure the symbol will be a long lasting symbol that stands the test of time."

It also helped if the flag was visually appealing and well designed.

Voting will continue until May 5.

"I am hoping we get at least 2,000 total votes so that we get a really great feel for what flag our community feels symbolizes them the best," Page said.

The winning design will be presented to the Terre Haute City Council for approval on May 9, then presented to the community on June 14, which appropriately enough is Flag Day.
