NEW YORK (PIX11) – Hot temperatures hit New York and New Jersey.

New York’s high on Sunday was in the 70s, and lows were around 50 degrees.

New York City forecast and PIX11’s Weather Center

By Monday, temperatures could reach a whopping 85 degrees with some stray showers and a low of 62 degrees. Sunny skies and dry conditions will still dominate the hot start to the week.

After Monday, temperatures are expected to drop again to the high 60s and low 70s, with more chances of showers on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Motional cut about 550 employees, around 40%, in recent restructuring, sources say
Around 550 employees across autonomous vehicle company Motional have been laid off, according to information taken from WARN notice filings and sources at the company. Earlier this week, TechCrunch reported that Motional is pausing commercial operations and delaying plans to launch a robotaxi service with its next-gen Hyundai Ioniq 5 robotaxis until 2026 as it undergoes restructuring. An employee at Motional who spoke to TechCrunch on the condition of anonymity said every team has been affected, with high-level departures including the company’s chief operating officer, Abe Ghabra.

Google gets serious about AI-generated video at Google I/O 2024
Google’s gunning for OpenAI’s Sora with Veo, an AI model that can create 1080p video clips around a minute long given a text prompt. Unveiled on Tuesday at Google’s I/O 2024 developer conference, Veo can capture different visual and cinematic styles, including shots of landscapes and timelapses, and make edits and adjustments to already-generated footage. “We’re exploring features like storyboarding and generating longer scenes to see what Veo can do,” Demis Hassabis, head of Google’s AI R&D lab DeepMind, told reporters during a virtual roundtable.

Google is building its Gemini Nano AI model into Chrome on the desktop
At the Google I/O 2024 developer conference on Tuesday, Google announced that it is building Gemini Nano, the smallest of its AI models, directly into the Chrome desktop client, starting with Chrome 126. Google itself plans to use this new capability to power features like the existing "help me write" tool from Workspace Lab in Gmail, for example. The company says it's the recent work on WebGPU and WASM support in Chrome that enables these models to run at a reasonable speed on a wide set of hardware.

Google is improving its AI-powered chatbot Gemini so that it can better understand the world around it — and the people conversing with it. At the Google I/O 2024 developer conference on Tuesday, the company previewed a new experience in Gemini called Gemini Live, which lets users have “in-depth” voice chats with Gemini on their smartphones. “With Live, Gemini can better understand you,” Sissie Hsiao, GM for Gemini experiences at Google, said during a press briefing.
