Tehama District Fair opens next week

Apr. 26—Stars, Stripes and Fair Delights is the theme for the 104th annual Tehama District Fair, which runs May 2-5 with a Grand Opening at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 2 and free admission for all guests.

That same day, at 5 p.m., will be the Miss Tehama County Pageant will take place on the Midway Stage with contestants competing in stage arts, speech, visual poise and more. The event will also feature the Junior Miss and Little Miss Tehama County.

And what is a county fair without a carnival rides, games and food, vendors, entertainment, exhibits, the junior livestock shows and auction, destruction derby, horse show and more — all of which are features of this year's Tehama District Fair, 650 Antelope Blvd., Red Bluff.

The carnival will open daily, May 2-3 at 4 p.m. and May 4-5 at 12 p.m., featuring spectacular rides to thrill both the young and old.

Exhibit buildings featuring quilts, flowers, plants, sewing, floriculture, horticulture and much, much more will also be open daily and is free for visitors to enjoy.

For live entertainment the fair will feature a concert by county music stars George Birge and Raelynn, Huckleberry Road, Clayton Lee and the A.O.D., and the California Grown Band.

Several Corning area residents are participating in this year's fair as Independent, FFA and 4-H members showing and selling livestock, in the destruction derby, and art, craft and flower exhibitions.

Sarah Richardson, agriculture teacher and FFA adviser at Corning High School, said the chapter has six members showing steers, one showing dairy cattle, 25 selling swine, and 16 will have lambs ready to exhibit throughout the week and ready to sell on Saturday, May 4 at the Tehama Junior Livestock Auction, which starts at 8 a.m. in the Don Smith Pavilion.

"We have a really good group from the high school showing their animals and selling them at the auction," Richardson stated. "I expect we should do really well this year."

There are also 4-H members from Corning clubs, as well as independent handlers, showing and selling their livestock projects of poultry, rabbits, goats, lambs, pigs and steers.

In 202 the Tehama District Jr. Livestock Auction hit a record $1.2 million with 357 lots sold, and the livestock committee is looking to top that record this year.

However, livestock enthusiasts don't have to wait until the auction to enjoy the animals, as they will be on hand in the livestock barns throughout the Fair.

Along with the animals, there are many other daily attractions for attendees to look forward to, such as an arm wrestling tournament, There's Magic in the Fair, Norcal Destruction Derby, Truck 'n Tractor Pulls, The Wilder Show, Stilt Circus, Stingray Encounter and Sea Lion Splash.

The 30th District Agricultural Association hosts and organizes the Tehama District Fair, which was first held in 1921. Current association board members include President Mark Mulliner, Vice President Pete Dagorret, and directors Shanna Long, Linda Durrer, Jorge Lomeli and Jennifer Torres, with Mandy Staley serving as the chief executive officer.
