Teens arrested in pawn shop burglary

ELKHART — Two suspects in an early morning pawn shop burglary were arrested after leading police on a short chase.

The subjects are 15 and 16 years old, the Elkhart Police Department said.

Officers arrived at 3:25 a.m. Wednesday to Worldwide Pawn, 2621 W. Lexington Ave., in reference to an alarm. While investigating, an officer saw a broken front glass door to the business and a damaged display case inside the building.

A business representative arrived and reported that someone broke into the business and took several items without permission, including a crossbow, air rifles and ammunition between 2:43 a.m. and 3:16 a.m.

Upon arriving at the scene, an officer saw a suspicious Jeep Compass leaving the business parking lot of the Tom Naquin car lot immediately to the east of the pawn shop, the report said. A second officer followed the Jeep and attempted a traffic stop near West Lexington and Highland avenues, police said.

The suspect vehicle did not stop, and a brief pursuit ensued before the vehicle finally stopped near the intersection of West Lexington Ave and Socorro Street. Officers conducted a felony stop on the vehicle and located the two juvenile males in the vehicle. They were taken into custody without further incident.

Items allegedly taken from the business were located in the SUV.

The boys were taken to the Juvenile Detention Center. After discussion with the Juvenile Detention Center, both juveniles were transported to the Elkhart Police Department where they were released to parents/guardians, the report said.
