Teens among 3 charged in GTA carjackings
Three people, including two teenagers, are facing charges after carjackings in the Greater Toronto Area, York Regional Police say.
In a news release issued Friday, police said that on April 6, officers were called about a carjacking attempt in a parking lot in the area of Yonge Street and Glen Cameron Road in Thornhill.
A woman was walking to her SUV when a person approached and pulled her away, while a second person then jumped in her vehicle, police said.
The victim struggled, and her husband jumped in to help her out, according to the news release. As suspects tried to take off in her vehicle, they then crashed into another vehicle as the woman's husband tried to pull them out of the car.
The suspects then ran to a white Acura that was parked nearby and was being driven by a third person, police say.
Investigators discerned that the Acura had been stolen in Peel earlier in April.
Then on April 7, the same Acura was used during a carjacking of a Blue BMW in Toronto, police say. The people involved were ultimately charged by Toronto police, according to the news release.
Last Saturday, York officers then found the Acura with three different people inside, and used flashbangs as a distraction before crashing into the car to block the vehicle. Investigators released video of that incident, as well as the first carjacking attempt:
Those three people tried to run off and tossed a loaded gun, police say. All of them were arrested and the stolen vehicle was then recovered.
An 18-year-old, a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old were all charged with "numerous firearm and property offences," police say.
Investigators say they believe there might be other people involved in "this criminal network," and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
