YORKTOWN, Va. (WAVY) – The teen shot by a York-Poquoson deputy after authorities say he pointed a gun at other deputies last month, has been arrested.

Teen shot by deputy in Yorktown pointed gun at deputies, sheriff says

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office says the teen was arrested on May 1 and charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, reckless handling of a firearm, three counts of brandishing a firearm and juvenile in possession of a firearm.

The arrest came just over two weeks after the teen was shot on Sunday, April 14 on Arcadia Loop in Yorktown.

Authorities said the teen was harassing children at a playground with a gun with a laser pointer beforehand.

In a press conference, York-Poquoson Sheriff Ron Montgomery said the teen barricaded himself in a car with a 9mm handgun with an extended magazine of 23 bullets. Deputies asked the teen to drop the weapon and get out of the car multiple times.

The teen eventually got out of the car from the passenger’s side door and pointed the gun in the direction of the deputies, causing one of the deputies to fire three shots at the teen, according to Montgomery. The teen was shot twice and taken to the hospital, where he was originally listed in critical condition.

The teen’s first court appearance is scheduled for May 2.
