Teen drowns at swim camp during drills

PINELLAS COUNTY, Florida (WJW) – A teen swimmer who was visiting Florida with his swim team drowned in the Gulf of Mexico.

According to a release from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, William Zhang, 17, was visiting from Canada with his swim team for swim camp.

Zhang and several other swimmers were conducting drills last week at Indian Shores beach.

According to the sheriff’s office, Zhang didn’t return to shore at the end of the drills. A 911 caller told deputies that the swimmer had been carried offshore, the sheriff reports.

The detectives say swim coaches checked for riptides before the teen swimmers entered the water.

Dive crews recovered Zhang’s body after several hours of searching.
