Taste of summer continues, storm chances increase

Tonight provides the risk for a stray shower or two over the mountains before midnight, much like what we saw last night in parts of Pocahontas and Greenbrier counties. Once again, patchy instances of fog will be possible with low temperatures in the low 60s as a light south to southwest breeze keeps conditions warm and a touch muggy overnight.

Wednesday once again will be dry for most, but with a southerly breeze ushering more heat and humidity ahead of our next storm system, isolated mountain showers are possible in what will be a very summer-like day with high temperatures in the low to mid 80s. A few western town spots will approach 90 degrees. Though isolated storms will be very few and far between, they won’t be moving quickly, so very localized heavy rainfall is possible. By the overnight, a few showers will be expected with a cold front inching closer to the region. We’ll see temperatures dip back into the low 60s overnight.

Thursday features scattered showers and thunderstorms with our cold front crossing. It won’t rain all the time, but a few storms could produce brief heavy rainfall with a gloomy day on the way under mostly cloudy skies. Expect wet roadways, especially for the evening commute. With the clouds and storms around, high temperatures will dip back into the mid 70s.

Severe Weather Awareness Week: Flash flood Safety

Friday sees continued chances for rain and storms, as our cold front stalls just to our south. With the front just to our south and a potential low pressure system riding along that front, more chances for storms will result with high temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. There will be more breaks in the rain activity than on Thursday, however, the Weather Prediction Center has placed our region in a level one out of four risk for flooding due to the slow-moving nature of storms that do develop.

Saturday as we kick off Memorial Day weekend begins on an unsettled note and unfortunately, this pattern looks to stick around. Scattered showers and storms will be around, though not widespread in coverage, as another cold front slides into the area and then stalls. High temperatures will be in the upper 70s. The theme for the Memorial Day weekend holiday will be scattered downpours, but there will be plenty of breaks between scattered showers and storms.

Why is Memorial Day in the spring?

Sunday keeps the risk for a few scattered showers and storms, with a low pressure system moving over the region as it rides along our stalled front. We’ll watch that setup closely for the potential for a couple of strong storms. Overall, it’s still a day where scattered storms will be expected with breaks and It’s a summer-like day on the way with our stalled front slightly lifting north as a warm front, which should enable high temperatures to jump back up to near 80.

Memorial Day will still provide the chance for scattered showers but at this juncture, the holiday itself is trending a little drier than on Saturday and Sunday. We’ll see high temperatures in the mid to upper 70s, which is about ten degrees warmer than last year on Memorial Day.

Tuesday brings forth another area of low pressure, which will provide the risk for a few showers and storms once again. Temperatures will be a little cooler, with highs in the low 70s.

Looking ahead, we still see showers lingering for Wednesday, as Tuesday’s low pressure system heads off to the east and gives our region a northwest flow. However, Thursday into Friday sees high pressure nudge in from Canada, and that will give us some hope for some drier weather on the way. High temperatures on Wednesday will struggle to reach 70 degrees, with low to mid 70s expected Thursday into Friday.
