Taskmaster star Rhod Gilbert broke down in tears during filming for The Great British Bake Off's Stand Up To Cancer 2024 special as he recalled his cancer diagnosis.

The comedian appeared alongside former EastEnders star Danny Dyer, TV presenter Leigh Francis and BBC Radio 1's Yinka Bokinni on last night's (March 24) fundraising special - which saw him open up on his own battle with the disease.

During the episode, he reflected on being diagnosed with stage four head and neck cancer in an emotional interview, struggling to hold back tears as he said he was "lucky" to still be here.

"For me, It's really really emotional to be here. There was a point where I didn't really know what the future held. Just to be here, to be anywhere, is pretty good. Amazing," he said.

"I'm lucky to be here at all," he continued. "I realised when I got cancer that I had been plodding through life thinking 'other people get cancer'."

Gilbert had been diagnosed with the disease back in July 2022, going on to detail his experience with cancer during his SU2C special Rhod Gilbert: A Pain in the Neck.

He has since given a positive update on his health, revealing in October 2023 that he had received a clear cancer scan.

"I was back on the road earlier this year when I got a call to say my latest scan had shown the cancer was in the areas they knew about, but it wasn't in my lungs or my brain," he said during an interview with the Radio Times.

"I told my consultant, 'This is the best day of my life'. If you'd told me that three months earlier… Well, everything becomes relative."

Gilbert then went on to reveal that a subsequent scan had also come back clear, adding: "The best thing was that the tumour had gone, and it was once again an ordinary blood vessel."

The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer is available to watch and stream on Channel 4 later.
