TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Tampa Bay area school was named the best high school in Florida.

The rankings were assembled by U.S. News & World Report.

Pine View School in Osprey beat out 1,168 other high schools for the top spot. It was the only Tampa Bay area school to make the list.

Pine View School was Florida’s first school for the intellectually gifted and has maintained high admissions standards since. The school made headlines in 2022 after its class president, who said he was told not to mention his LGBTQ+ identity in his graduation speech, used “curly hair” as a euphemism to speak against Florida’s alleged anti-gay policies.

As for schools in immediate the Tampa-St. Pete metro area, Plant High School in south Tampa was ranked number one.
