Swearing-in of new Delta Co. commissioners delayed after canvassers fail to certify election

ESCANABA, Mich. (WJMN) — The planned swearing-in for the three winners of Delta County’s commissioner recall election has been rescheduled pending a split decision by the local Board of Canvassers.

UPDATE: Recall election still uncertified as canvassers eye suspect ‘ratio’

In an email sent by Delta County Clerk Nancy Przewrocki, she notified the presumed winners that the Oath of Office originally planned for Myra Croasdell and Matt Jensen had to be cancelled due to half of the Board of Canvassers voting not to certify the May 7 election results.

Przewrocki said while canvassers John Myers and Theresa Nelson voted to certify the results, Bonnie Hakkola and LeeAnne Oman voted against certification.

DIVISION IN DELTA COUNTY: How firing an administrator led to thousands-strong recall movement

We’re told the board did agree to hold another meeting on Monday, May 20 to hold a final certification vote.

The clerk said if the next vote is in favor of certification, the oath of Office ceremony and reorganizational meeting for the Board of Commissioners can be held the following day.

If the board votes against certification, the decision will be passed on to the State Board of Canvassers.

It is currently unclear why the two canvassers voted against certification.

This comes after a contentious year between the public and three members of the Board of Commissioners after their decision to fire then-Administrator Emily DeSalvo after she delivered an 11-minute speech calling out what she described as unethical behavior.

All three commissioner recall candidates appeared to have handily defeated commissioners David Moyle, Bob Barron, and Bob Petersen, who each lost by a margin of more than 40%.
