SWB RailRiders prepare for home opener

MOOSIC, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are just one week out from its home opener, and as the sun rises over the diamond, so does everyone’s excitement like champs about the start of the season.

“I love the first pitch, the very first pitch of the very first game, like the excitement of that first day. Opening day, opening night.”

Adam Marco, the voice of the RailRiders, tells 28/22 News about some changes fans may notice to the stadium, including the MLB’s requirement of new netting across the foul poles.

He says it may take some getting used to, but fans should still bring their mitts.

“You need to pay attention. Pop-ups over top of the netting can still come down and hit fans, players will throw foul balls as they always do or over top of the netting when they make that final catch, that final out of an inning so the opportunities are still there.”

Another change is on the menu where Executive Chef Joseph Jackson is adding new meals.

“So that’s our housemade pulled pork, we smoke it for 16 hours with our house barbecue rub, and then we hit it with our house barbecue sauce, and then our housemade queso, and then our housemade asian slaw.”

Chef Joseph says hours of prep work go into getting ready for the season along with testing out their new dishes.

“We eat, we think, we eat and then we think some more, and then we finally you know come together and sit down as a group and we go, ‘ok, what’s going to work and what’s not you know? What’re our favorites?’ and we just go from there.”

A staple now at PNC Field is the sensory safe suite for families and children with autism or special needs. The high demand for it leads to sensory-friendly games that will happen this year.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders will start their season on the road in Buffalo this Friday.

On April 2nd, their home opener will take place in Moosic against the Syracuse Mets with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
