SUV crashes through St. Bernard Cemetery in Akron Saturday, destroying 21 grave markers
A car crashed through St. Bernard Cemetery Saturday morning, damaging multiple grave markers and fencing, according to a Facebook post from St. Bernard Catholic Church.
The 2013 Nissan X-Terra was traveling east on South Maple Street near Crestwood when the 24-year-old female driver lost control of the vehicle, jumping the curb and striking a utility pole before crashing through cemetery fencing.
Twenty-one grave markers were destroyed, as well as fencing, a utility pole, a gate and guide lines, according to the Akron police traffic crash report. The driver suffered minor injuries; she declined medical attention and was escorted home by officers.
She was cited with failure to control, a traffic offense.
There will be cleanup at the cemetery at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday, according to the Facebook post.
In 2018, a car traveling 90 miles per hour crashed through Holy Cross Cemetery and damaged 10 headstones. The driver of that incident was hospitalized and subsequently charged with reckless operation and failure to control.
