Suspected thief bear hugs man before throwing punches in Colma

(KRON) – A San Francisco man was arrested after allegedly attacking a person, according to the Colma Police Department.

Colma police officers were alerted to a man physically attacking another man near Mission Road and El Camino Real at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Responding officers located two men lying on the ground. Officers detained the suspect. Police said the victim informed them that the suspect came from behind, placed him in a bear hug and then began punching him. The victim also told police that the suspect attempted to steal his phone, according to police.

The suspect was identified as 65-year-old San Francisco resident Matthew Callaway.

The Colma Fire Department treated the victim who sustained moderate injuries.

Callaway was arrested and booked into the San Mateo County Jail for robbery and assault likely to cause great bodily injury.
