Suspect charged in Main Street shooting

Apr. 3—Charges have been filed against a Joplin man still being sought for a Monday night shooting on Main Street.

Trent Lamont Cobb, 33, 1515 S. Wall Ave., faces charges of first-degree felony assault and armed criminal action filed in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin. A warrant has been issued by the court for Cobb's arrest by Judge Joseph Hensley. He ordered that Cobb be held without bond when he is apprehended.

Police and court records do not identify the man who was shot and who was listed Tuesday as being in serious condition in a Joplin hospital. An update on his condition was not available from police Wednesday. A sworn statement filed in court by Detective Rian Holt, a Joplin police investigator, to support the filing of charges refers to the victim only as V1.

The shooting took place at 8:18 p.m. Monday in the area of 18th and Main streets.

Holt's affidavit states that Cobb arrived at the location with a woman. She allegedly walked over to the man who later was shot and hit him in the head with her hand. An argument erupted between the two, the statement reports. Cobb then walked behind a car parked at the scene and began arguing with the man as well. Cobb allegedly pointed a handgun at the man and fired, striking the victim in the abdomen. Cobb then fled on foot, the investigator reported.

Police said on Tuesday they had searched a house at 1515 S. Wall Ave. in trying to apprehend the alleged shooter but did not find him.

At the time police information was being submitted to the court seeking the charges and warrant, the shooting victim was in surgery at a local hospital.

Police ask that anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Cobb contact the Joplin Police Department at 417-623-3131 or their local law enforcement agency. Cobb should be considered armed and dangerous, police said.

People with information about the shooting may contact Bolt at 417-623-3131, ext. 1895, or Capt. Nick Jimenez at 417-623-3131, ext. 1676.

Police Chief Richard Pearson said on Tuesday in a police statement, "I want the public to know this was an isolated incident between people known to each other and there is no general threat to the public at this time."
