Suspect arrested in $50,000 computer pop-up scam targeting senior

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A suspect was arrested Thursday following a computer pop-up scam that targeted a senior in Oceanside, authorities said.

On Wednesday, the scammer falsely warned the victim that their bank account or other personal data was compromised, Capt. John McKean with the Oceanside Police Department said in a news release.

In order to fix it, the scammer demanded $50,000 and received the money before police were notified, according to officials.

The scammers called back once again on Thursday, this time wanting another $40,000.

“The Oceanside Police Department Property and Financial Crimes Unit, working jointly with the FBI Elder Justice Task Force, swiftly devised a plan and coordinated with the victim to have the courier or ‘Money Mule’ return to a predetermined location and collect the money,” McKean said.

Chi Hung Duong, a 44-year-old resident of Monterey Park, Calif., was identified as the suspect and arrested without incident, police said. Duong was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on a $200,000 bail.

Oceanside police has provided more information on scams on its website.

Authorities warn the public about scams involving pre-paid credit cards, gift cards, computers or phones.
