Suspect accused of shooting 2 Robeson County deputies faces 5 federal charges: USDOJ

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A man accused of shooting two Robeson County sheriff’s deputies has been charged in a five-count federal indictment. His charges are related to firearms, a carjacking and drug trafficking, according to the United States Department of Justice.

The USDOJ says Shawn Locklear Jr., 20, faces a minimum of 40 years and a maximum of life in prison if convicted of all crimes.

“Violence towards law enforcement will never be tolerated in North Carolina.  We will use every resource necessary to hold accountable anyone who endangers police or first responders,” said U.S. Attorney Michael Easley. “The conduct alleged in the indictment endangered the lives of two Robeson County Deputies and this indictment should serve as a warning to anyone who would consider similar conduct.”

According to the indictment, Locklear possessed marijuana and a machine gun in September 2023.

Locklear is also a suspect in a November 2023 shooting that injured two Robeson County sheriff’s deputies who were attempting to serve him with arrest warrants.

The indictment said after the deputies were hit by gunfire, they took cover behind their patrol car. Locklear is then alleged to have entered the patrol car and put it in reverse as one deputy was on the ground behind the vehicle. Documents stated that the deputy was able to push himself partially out of the way before Locklear drove over his leg.

According to the indictment, Locklear drove away in the patrol vehicle. The deputies’ body camera footage captured the incident.

Locklear is also accused to have discharged a firearm on the date of the carjacking.

Locklear faces the following federal charges:

  • Possession with intent to distribute marijuana

  • Possession of a machinegun in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime

  • Possession of a machinegun

  • Carjacking resulting in serious bodily injury

  • Discharging a firearm in conjunction with a crime of violence
