Suspect accused of killing Helena-West Helena high school student after prom in custody

HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. – Arkansas State Police said the suspect who was accused of killing a Helena-West Helena Central High School senior after prom is now in custody.

Special agents said Sunday that 19-year-old Donterious Stephens was taken into custody at the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office.

Stephens is facing charges of first-degree murder and possession of firearms by certain persons in the death of 18-year-old Lorenzo Harrison III.

Officials with Helena-West Helena Schools released the following statement:

“On the behalf of the Helena-West Helena School District Administration our hearts ache for the tragic loss of our beloved 12th-grade student at Central High School, and our deepest sympathies extend to his grieving family, classmates, friends, and our entire school community impacted by this senseless act of violence.

As we come together to mourn this heartbreaking loss, let us fortify our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and staff. In times of such profound grief, it is essential that we offer not only our empathy but also tangible support. Therefore, the district’s crisis team will be onsite tomorrow morning at Central High School to provide immediate counseling services for all who need it.

During this time of immense sorrow, let us lean on one another for strength and solace. Together, may we honor his memory and work towards healing the wounds inflicted by this tragedy.”

2 dead, 6 hurt in shooting at Tennessee block party: police

ASP officials said the incident happened during a party following the school’s prom. State troopers said authorities were called to the incident on Highway 49 around 1 a.m. Sunday, April 21.

Special agents said that Harrison was a senior, and Stephens is a previous graduate.
