Surveillance video of parking lot shooting leads to arrest, police say

ST. LOUIS – A 32-year-old St. Louis man is charged with a fatal shooting outside a convenience store earlier this month in the Academy neighborhood.

According to Evita Caldwell, a spokeswoman for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting took place on March 10 around 9:30 p.m. in the Crowd Food Mart parking lot at the intersection of North Kingshighway Boulevard and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive.

Police found the victim, Eugene Stapleton, lying dead next to his car. Stapleton was 39.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video from the business, showing a group of people having an argument outside the store. Police claim Willie M. Warren could be seen on video walking up to the group from the south end of the parking lot and holding a gun behind his right leg.

After Stapleton walked away and the group separated, Warren allegedly pointed his gun and fired several shots. Stapleton was struck and killed.

Police claim Warren was interviewed and not only admitted to the shooting but said he tossed the gun in the river.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Warren with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm. He remains jailed without bond.

Warren already has multiple felony convictions on his record, according to police.
