Sunday Conversation: Columbus Councilor Tyson Begley talks about his fill-in role

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Columbus businessman Tyson Begley has been on the city council for about a year — and his days on the legislative body or numbered.

Begley was selected by councilors to fill the unexpired District 10 term of John House, who resigned last year to care of his wife.

Begley sat down recently with WRBL for the Sunday Conversation. He talked about his time on council, and some of the controversial votes including his to help the redevelopment of Golden Park to bring Braves minor league baseball to Columbus.

Begley pledged not to seek the full-time seat in exchange for the appointment. Four people — businessman John Anker, Realtor Travis Chambers, Pastor Dr. Patrick Leonard and retired soldier Rocky Marsh — are running to win the four-year term.

The race is on the May 21 primary ballot twice. Once for the rest of House’s term and once for the full term. If no one wins 50 percent of the vote plus one, then the race would go to a runoff.

Once a winner is determined, unlike other council seats, that person will assume the District 10 job and Begley will step aside.
