Students attacked by aggressive dogs during field day at Lathrop Elementary

LATHROP, Mo. — A day of fun ended with a frightening experience for students at Lathrop Elementary School Thursday.

According to Superintendent Dr. Adam Willard, students were participating in their annual outdoor field day around noon when two dogs behaving in an aggressive manner came onto the school property and began attacking students.

Local law enforcement responded quickly to the incident.

As teachers were moving students inside, one of the dogs moved aggressively towards one of the police officers when another officer shot and killed it, according to Willard.

Willard said two students were bitten and not severely hurt. They have been treated and all other students are safe.

Willard said several of the students witnessed the dog being shot and killed.

“We recognize the entire situation was traumatic for the students and we wanted to make families aware of the matter,” Willard said. “We want to thank our staff for their professionalism and composure during this event.”
