Student violently attacks classmate with Stanley mug in school cafeteria, officials say

A middle school student sustained serious injuries in an assault with a metal Stanley mug, Pennsylvania officials told media outlets.

On Wednesday, April 17, a seventh grade student at Pennbrook Middle School was involved in a “physical altercation” with another student in the cafeteria, principal Nick Taylor said in a letter to families.

Upper Gwynedd police said surveillance footage shows one student beat the other in the head with a metal Stanley mug, WTXF and WPVI reported.

The mug was a 40-ounce Stanley tumbler, WCAU reports. The cups have become a viral sensation over the past year.

Police described the altercation as an “unprovoked, sudden, violent attack,” according to WPVI.

“All of sudden you just hear these terrible loud bangs of the Stanley bouncing off her head,” one Pennbrook student told the station. “We had to sit in there and watch them clean up the blood off those tables and ground.”

As a result of the attack, students were placed on an 8-minute “hold,” during which they were not permitted to move from their spots, the middle school principal said.

The student was taken to a local hospital but has since been released and is recovering at home, according to school officials and media reports.

“This should not have happened, period,” Superintendent Todd Bauer said at the beginning of an April 18 North Penn School Board meeting.

“Every parent has the right to send their child to school and their child to feel safe,” he said. “As a result of yesterday’s incident, I do recognize and understand why some of you did not feel that way this morning.”

North Wales, where the middle school is located, is about a 25-mile drive northwest from Philadelphia.
