Stream advisory issued for Verdigris River in Southeast Kansas

SOUTHEAST KANSAS — A stream advisory has been issued for a Southeast Kansas river.

The body of water in question — The Verdigris River, from 75 Highway East of Neodesha, Kansas in Wilson County, to the Oklahoma state line.

An oil well spilled approximately 500 feet from the river, resulting in an advisory for residents and animals not to enter the water at this time.

The Kansas Corporation Commission and National Response Center are currently working to address the source of the contamination.

High streamflow conditions may have contributed to increased brine and crude oil in the water. At this time, do not enter the stream, and prevent children and animals from doing so.
