Stormy into and through Easter weekend

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Thursday, Utah! A cold front will be moving across the northern half of the state today and will spell the return of wet weather.

We’ll see scattered showers for most spots along and north of I-70 today. The front will move across the Wasatch Front and Wasatch Back this afternoon before moving into central Utah late this afternoon and evening.

Storms move back into Utah to close out the workweek

Where we see wet weather, there will be the chance of thunderstorms. We’ll mainly see valley rain and mountain snow, but for instances with heavier showers, storms, and behind the front, some graupel and even snow can’t be ruled out in our valleys.

Mountains in northern Utah will see snow and because of that we have winter weather advisories posted. The advisory for the northern Wasatch Mountains goes until 6PM this evening with a chance we receive 5-10″ of snow.

The southern Wasatch and western Uintas will see the advisory continue through 9PM as 6-12″ of snow looks possible. For the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs, the advisory continues through midnight tonight.

As the front moves through, we could see snowfall rates reach or even exceed 1″ per hour which is very heavy snow. Be prepared if you plan on traveling into the high country and make sure your car is properly equipped!

Ahead of the front, we’ll see highs in the 40s and 50s for most in northern Utah while southern Utah will see 50s and 60s. St. George and Lake Powell will have a chance to see the low 70s. The further south you go today, the less likely it is that wet weather will find you.

Our cold front will stall in south central Utah, and the stalled front will lift north Friday helping to generate more showers that meander northward, so isolated showers are expected to hold for central and northern Utah into Friday.

Even though it will be a little cooler than today, we’ll continue to mainly hold onto valley rain and mountain snow with snow levels likely fluctuating between 5-7k ft., even though it could drop to around 4,500 ft. tonight.

Through tomorrow most valleys and benches will predominately see rain, but minor accumulations can’t be ruled out. Meanwhile, mountain valleys could see several inches of snow and in isolated cases, maybe half a foot or more.

Most northern and central mountains will likely see a foot and a half. For mountains lower than 7,000 ft., totals will likely be lower.

The storm driving the cold front today and tomorrow will start to move into our area over the Easter Weekend. This will result in a good chance of showers across the entire state.

While we won’t see non-stop showers everywhere, there’s a good chance that at any point over the weekend that wet weather will find you.

Northern Utah won’t see many changes with temperatures, but we will cool down slightly down south. For any planned Easter Egg hunts, it would be a good idea to have an inside contingent plan just in case!

We’ll hold onto some moisture potential on Monday as our storm begins to pull away before entering a calmer and milder pattern into the middle of next week.
