Storm closes roads in Somerset County

Apr. 2—MEYERSDALE, Pa. — An early spring storm soaked the region overnight forcing responders to close sections of six Somerset County roads.

Many of the roads are west of Meyersdale, where a steady downpour caused the Casselman River to rise by more than 2 1/2 feet, Meyersdale Fire Chief Mike Miller said.

As of 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, the deluge added up to just a few flooded basements, but several roads remained closed as responders in both Somerset and Cambria counties awaited a few more rounds of storms.

"We've got a break right now," Miller said. "But it looks like there's more coming."

Among the sections of roads closed Tuesday morning in the Meyersdale area:

—Mount Davis Road near the Somerset County Fairgrounds.

—Matlick Road from Kinsinger to Mount Davis.

—Cemetary Road in Summit Township.

—Coke Oven Road, off of Mount Davis.

Further north, Pine Hill Road was also closed in Summit Township, Somerset County 911 officials said.

A National Weather Service gauge reported at least 1.4 inches of rain fell over the past 24 hours in Confluence and part of Summit Township.

Just over 1 1/2 inches were recorded at a station alongside North Fork Road in Conemaugh Township.

Signs warned motorists in Conemaugh Township to avoid Coon Ridge Road at Somerset Pike.

Cambria County 911 officials said a few trees or branches were reported down overnight, but no roads were closed due to the storm.
