Storage facility opens in old Dispatch building

Mar. 27—HENDERSON — What was once the Henderson Dispatch building at 304 South Chestnut Street is now Carolina Secure Storage, a fact not lost on those attending a ribbon cutting at the site on Wednesday.

Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce ambassadors and staff along with local officials met in one of the building's corridors, surrounded by pristine white and blue storage units, atop a refurbished floor.

Desiree Brooks, a former Dispatch staffer who worked out of that building, reminisced alongside HVCC President Sandra Wilkerson about the state of the old building — the old, carpeted floor was something of a hazard, they joked.

It was a bit of a fixer-upper, co-owner Boyd Taylor said — vagrants living inside, canisters of ink and abandoned equipment strewn about all over the place. Indeed, whoever wanted to do something with the deteriorating, vacant building had to have a real vision, he said.

He thanked local officials for being "easy to work with."

The location on Chestnut is the company's third such location in Henderson. Americans like stuff, Taylor joked, so they'd rather store that stuff in a secure, climate-controlled place like Carolina Secure Storage.

Vance County Board of Commissioners Chair Dan Brummitt thanked the company for being a part of the county's continual improvement. Downtown Development Commission Director Tracy Madigan appreciated their immediate proximity to her church right across Pettigrew Street.

Creedmoor Holding Company obtained a special use permit to convert the building into the 85-unit storage facility last February. That's the company's modus operandi — refurbishing old buildings for new purposes.

Colonial Rentals LLC, a company sharing an address with EFP Capital, bought the building, split between two lots, in April 2022. They turned the deed over to Creedmoor Holding Company just shy of a year later.

The Dispatch first moved into the building on South Chestnut 67 years ago, 1957, from an older location on Young Street. In 2021, it moved again to its current address at 420 South Garnett Street.
