Steve Johnson preparing for retirement after over 47 years at News 19

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – After over 47 years covering the Tennessee Valley, Steve Johnson has decided to call it a career in June 2024.

Steve will anchor his final newscast on June 14.

Steve was born in North Carolina but has long called Huntsville home. His family moved to Huntsville when he was in third grade after his father got a job at Redstone Arsenal.

A graduate of Huntsville High, he went on to Auburn University where majored in Journalism, with minors in speech, English, and history. After graduation, Steve started working in Anniston at a small TV station that no longer exists, WHMA.

He made the move back to the Rocket City and started as Sports Director at Action News 19 on May 2, 1977. He began making the transition from sports to news in 1999.

Since then, Steve has worn many hats in the newsroom, including Senior Reporter and Special Assignment Reporter, and eventually weekend morning anchor, before becoming a weekday morning anchor.

During his time at WHNT, Steve has interviewed sporting greats like Bear Bryant, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. He covered NASA’s final Space Shuttle launch and produced a documentary on Dr. Wernher Von Braun.

You’ve also probably seen Steve’s Sunday morning interviews called “Leadership Perspectives,” which highlight several leaders in government, military and non-profit work.

Behind the scenes, Steve has been a leader, mentor and friend to many who have come through the doors at News 19. All of us are grateful for his service, humor and guidance in the newsroom!

We want to thank Steve for his commitment to covering the Tennessee Valley over the last 4 decades, and congratulate him on his upcoming retirement!
