Steuben County overdoses increase in February

STUEBEN COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) — Steuben County saw an increase in reported overdoses in February after seeing a drop in January.

According to the Steuben County Public Health Department, 19 overdoses were reported in the county in February, and Narcan was administered for five of those overdoses. Seven of the overdoses were suspected to have been caused by opioids.

There was a jump in the number of overdoses reported in February compared to January: January only saw 12 reported overdoses. However, there were no overdose-related deaths in January or February.

New opioid overdose reversal drug lasts longer than Narcan

“We are pleased to have seen zero reported fatalities in the beginning of 2024,” said Public Health Director Darlene Smith. “We continue to encourage anyone that is utilizing substances or supporting loved ones to access the resources at their disposal.”

Steuben County offers Narcan training to help prevent overdose deaths. Online Narcan training is available on Steuben County’s website, and in-person Narcan training can be scheduled by contacting the Steuben Prevention Coalition’s Opioid Committee or by calling Steuben Public Health at 607-664-2438. Steuben County also mails free Narcan kits to residents upon request.
