STEM events take over GVSU campus

ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Hundreds of people headed to Grand Valley State University’s campus on Saturday for two big STEM events.

The West Michigan First Robotics District competitions were held in the university’s fieldhouse. More than 40 high school teams from across the state put their robots to the test with different challenges. It went from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Region 12 Michigan Science Olympiad was on GVSU’s campus as well, where middle and high school teams competed in nearly two dozen different events. It went from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Nicki Bonczyk, the event and volunteer coordinator for the West Michigan First Robotics District event, said competitions like these help give students a look at what STEM can do and could potentially lead them to STEM-based careers.

“This is a great way to engage kids in science, technology, engineering and math. So first was set up to inspire the next heroes of technology to show them that science can be fun, engineering can be fun, and we’re hiding the hard work in the math by building a robot to compete here today,” Bonczyk said.

She encourages any student who is interested in robotics to give it a try.
