Stella Blues Restaurant and Bar catches fire, locals hope for reopening

ST. LOUIS – Flames erupted Friday afternoon at the Stella Blues Restaurant and Bar.

The St. Louis Fire Department received a call just after 1:30 p.m. with reports of heavy smoke coming out of the second floor, according to officials.

“Our investigators came later and it appears most of the damage was in the rear of the building. It appears most of the fire started above the suppression system in the kitchen—the suppression system is there to extinguish anything that flares up on the grill,” Capt. Garon Mosby with the St. Louis Fire Department said.

Those who were in the building at the time made it out safely, firefighters said.

“(The fire) got into that attic void in the roof, we had to put a hole in the roof. So a decent amount of repairs need to be made. Then you have the water that cascades down and the smoke damage. So pretty substantial damage, but I have faith that they’ll get it done like they said and reopen as soon as they can,” Capt. Mosby said.

It is believed the fire was accidental, with grease residue at the inception point. The owner has not provided a comment to FOX 2.

Residents are hopeful that the establishment will reopen.

“I hope they reopen it and they have the grill; that’s the main thing that sold them. I remember families with their kids coming in there just getting the food off the grill that they would cook for him,” Joseph Grubbs, resident, said.

An employee of the restaurant said a GoFundMe will be created soon if the community would like to help donate for repairs.
