Static electricity can be dangerous when pumping gas

BECKLEY (WVNS) – There’s one thing you should watch out for when pumping gas into your vehicle.

Static electricity can be a risk when fueling up at the gas station.

When pumping gas, it’s important to stay at the pump until you are finished fueling.

If you need to get back into your vehicle while pumping gas, be sure to discharge static electricity.

Lieutenant Chris Lanna with the City of Beckley Fire Department says to find something metal to touch to get rid of that static electricity.

“So, in order to discharge static electricity you want to touch some other metal object. Maybe a metal part of the vehicle or the guard post that usually surrounds all the islands on a gas pump. Something that’s directly grounded that gonna take away that static electricity” Lanna told 59News.

Lieutenant Lanna urged drivers to be cautious of the risks of static electricity.

In some cases it can start a fire.
