Statesville man killed in I-77 motorcycle, box truck collision: Highway Patrol

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Statesville man was killed in a motorcycle collision involving a box truck on I-77 overnight, North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

Troopers responded to calls regarding the accident around 1:40 a.m. Thursday, May 23, on I-77 near mile marker 56. Dustin Pope, 35, of Statesville was found suffering from injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

An initial investigation stated Pope was on a motorcycle and failed to reduce speed, causing a collision with a box truck. The driver of the box truck, who was from Charlotte, was not injured.

Roadways were shut down for about two hours during the investigation and cleanup.
