Meyersdale man charged in handgun incident

MEYERSDALE ― Scott Herring Sr., 58, Meyersdale, is facing several charges following an incident in the borough that ran from late Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

State police have charged Herring with making terroristic threats with intent to terrorize another by threatening to kill the victim with a firearm, simple assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, criminal trespassing and starting a fire.

State police reported at 9:16 p.m. Tuesday they received multiple reports of a man walking around the area on Large Street, carrying a handgun and yelling at people. When troopers encountered the man, he was inside an apartment, locked the door and refused to come out, according to a police affidavit. Once police identified Herring, they learned he was prohibited from possessing a firearm.

The Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) was called in to assist. State police tried numerous times to talk to Herring, but were unsuccessful and they evacuated the nearby apartments for safety.

Herring eventually was taken into custody and arraigned. Charges were filed with District Justice Douglas McCall Bell of Meyersdale.
