There’s a startling connection between “American Horror Story: Roanoke” and “Murder House” you need to see
American Horror Story: Spoilers.
Maybe this past weekend you had plans with friends and you went out and had a good time because that’s what you do on the weekends. Or maybe you were like me and thought “Plans? Pffft. I should probably re-watch American Horror Story: Murder House and look for CLUES that connect back to American Horror Story: Roanoke!!”
I obviously did the latter. And I barely made it 30 seconds into Murder House before I went, “Wait a second…”
As you’re probably well aware at this point, the newest season of AHS is focusing on the lost colony of Roanoke (maybe) and it’s shot documentary style (maybe) and it’s already a doozy (100% yes). Also, supposedly this season will start bridging the gap and connecting the dots between all the OTHER seasons of AHS. We’re only one episode into this new season, yes, but already it feels very familiar, as Ryan Murphy said it would be.
But, it might actually be TOO familiar: Both Murder House and Roanoke open exactly the same way. Shot of trees, followed by a shot of the house. It’s almost identical — it is identical.
There’s no such thing as a coincidence when it comes to American Horror Story. And yes, I double checked the “For Sale” signs from both Murder House and Roanoke, and sadly they do not match up. BUT STILL.
In all fairness, Coven actually starts sort of the same way, too, with a shot of trees:
But there’s no house in Coven.
Before we all start freaking out, let’s not forget we are only one episode into Roanoke, but a lot of emphasis has already been placed on the house, and the 10 acres of land surrounding the house. After seeing that the new intro completely mimics Murder House, it’s hard not to think about one of the opening bits of dialogue from the pilot:
This quote is literally the crux of AHS: Murder House. And it just might end up being the same for Roanoke.
So…is AHS dropping another huge clue on us? Is the Roanoke house really Murder House 2.0? (Come on, we’ve already seen ghosts!!) Might this idea of a decaying ~foundation~, a theme that was very present during Murder House, actually be what bridges the seasons together? And what is it about spooky old run-down houses and ghosts?!
