Homebuyer workshop Wednesday

CANTON – Community Building Partnership of Stark County will host a homebuyer workshop from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Stark County District Library Main Branch, 400 Market Ave. N.

The workshop will walk attendees through the steps to their first purchase, from obtaining mortgage pre-approval, to selecting the right real estate agent, and the requirements to apply for the City of Canton Down Payment Assistance Program.

A lender and a Realtor from Keller Williams Legacy Group Realty will talk about the homebuyer process through their eyes. After this workshop, attendees will be ready to schedule a one-on-one appointment with a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development counselor at Community Building Partnership for the next steps to go to a lender.

Live music, dancing on Wednesdays

CANTON − Music and dancing to a live band is available from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays at the Canton Polish-American Club, 1605 Henry Ave. SW. The public is welcome. Admission is $3 and includes snacks.

Ida’s Ice Cream Social and Birthday Celebration

CANTON – The McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, 800 McKinley Monument Drive NW, will host a new event called Ida’s Ice Cream Social & Birthday Celebration from 1 to 3 p.m. June 1 to celebrate the life of William McKinley’s wife, Ida Saxton.

Enjoy a variety of treats to celebrate her birthday, listen to live piano music and learn about Ida McKinley's history. A selection of her personal artifacts will be on display.

Tickets, $30 for members and $33 for nonmembers, include ice cream and toppings, a dessert sampling, beverage, sparkling grape juice toast, live entertainment, and a program by education and membership coordinator Baillie Mosier.

Civil War Roundtable topic is Hawaii

LAKE TWP. − The Stark County Civil War Roundtable will host the presentation “War a World Away: The Kingdom of Hawaii and the American Civil War” at 7 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, 3088 State St. NW.

University of Hawaii graduate Mark Perkins will discuss the threat and opportunity the war presented to Hawaii, with its small military and limited economy. The island nation was influenced by its relationship with a variety of nations and strong economic ties with the United States. Perkins will look at these issues and at the service and sacrifices the people of Hawaii made in the American Civil War.

Perkins' longtime interest in the Civil War included four years reenacting with the Fifth Texas Infantry, Company A, out of Akron, and co-editing, with George Skoch, the book "Lone Star Confederate: A Gallant and Good Soldier of the Fifth Texas Infantry." Perkins lives in Copley Township and is a member of the Kent Civil War Society.

Duck Derby fundraiser is Saturday

NORTH CANTON – Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health’s fourth annual Q-92 Duck Derby will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Eastwoods Park, 1129 Sprucewood St. SE. The race is at noon.

This family-friendly event will feature activities and the race. The agency's prevention team will have a table of activities for children; spectators can enjoy light refreshments, and Goldfish Swim School will be available to talk about water safety. Kids’ activities include face painting, a make-and-take project and a giant Jenga designed for children of all ages.

Individuals or families may adopt and name a duck for $10 or purchase a quack pack of ducks for $40 (five ducks). The winner receives $500, second place wins $150, third place earns $50 and last place gets a $25 pizza gift card. Sponsorship opportunities are available for individuals and businesses.

Kitten shower at the North Canton library Saturday

NORTH CANTON – The North Canton Public Library 185 N. Main St., will host a kitten shower benefiting Paws Fur Life and Pawsitive Hope between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.

Help local cat rescue groups prepare for kitten season by purchasing a gift from Amazon or Target gift registries; visit the gift registries at https://ncantonlibrary.com/kitten-shower/.

Enjoy traditional baby shower food and activities at the event, and learn about volunteering, meet homeless cats and kittens, and learn about fostering or adopting them.

Attendees may have gifts shipped directly to the library or bring them the day of the shower. Children are welcome.

Food drive to help veterans this month

The Stark County Sheriff’s Office is hosting the annual spring food drive this month to support veterans receiving services through the Honor Home in Canton.

The Honor Home Stark County is transitional housing for homeless veterans in Stark County that helps veterans through support and programming, while assisting them to procure permanent housing. There are two campuses in the county that can house up to 16 homeless male veterans and eight homeless female veterans.

Through May 31, several collection sites will be available for nonperishable food items for local veterans and their families. Items can be dropped off at the following locations:

  • Stark County Sheriff’s Office Safety Building, 4500 Atlantic Blvd. NW in Canton.

  • Concealed Handgun License office at the Stark County Sheriff’s Office Training Center, 143 First St. SE in Massillon.

  • Veterans Service Commission of Stark County office, 2955 Wise Ave. NW in Canton.

  • Louisville Police Department, 1150 W. Main St. in Louisville.

Drop off nonperishable items between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday each day of the drive. Any monetary donations should be addressed to the Honor Home, and all donations will be delivered to the Honor Home following the conclusion of the drive.
