Alliance Symphony plans concert

ALLIANCE – Alliance Symphony Orchestra will present its spring concert at 3 p.m. April 14 in Brush Performance Hall of the Giese Center for the Performing Arts. The concert will feature two student soloists who were selected during Mount Union’s Solo con tutti competition earlier this academic year. The Mount Union Alliance Chorale also will perform.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors/veterans and free for all students. Student and child tickets must be ordered by phone or in person. Tickets are available at mountunion.edu/boxoffice or through the Mount Union box office at 330-821-2565 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday when classes are in session. The box office also will open for ticket sales one hour before the performance.

Friends of Stark Library plans book sale

CANTON – Friends of Stark Library will hold sales from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. April 14. For $5, buy a bag of books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs and jigsaw puzzles of your choice (some exclusions apply). Boxes of presorted books in many genres are $8 each, or three boxes for $20. The bag of books is offered to teachers and homeschool educators with valid ID or home educator letter for $2.50 per bag. Vinyl records, large print books, coffee table books, graphic novels and comic books (excluded from bag sale) are available for purchase. Every child attending the sale will go home with five free books.

Aultman College Preview Day is Wednesday

CANTON − Aultman College will hold a Preview Day, an open house-style event for interested students, at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The event includes tours of college facilities and classrooms, the opportunity to meet with students, faculty and staff and presentations about the various programs in nursing, radiography, social work, medical assisting and the health sciences, as well as College Credit Plus for high school students.

Canton Woman's Club spring fundraiser set

CANTON – Canton Woman's Club spring fundraiser, Tea with the First Ladies, will be 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. May 4 at the Canton Woman's Club, 822 Market Ave. N. The cost is $45 per person by pre-paid reservations only, which must be received by April 19.

The menu will consist of a variety of teas, classic tea-time sandwiches, savories and desserts. Parking is free in the club’s private parking lot.

Players Guild presents 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’

JACKSON TWP. – The Players Guild Theatre will present "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" weekends from April 12-21 at Kent State University at Stark's Fine Arts Building, 6000 Frank Ave. NW. Book talk is Wednesday

JACKSON TWP. – Soroptimist International of Canton/Stark County will host a book talk at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Codex Brewing, 6305 Whipple Ave. NW. Massillon Museum to show documentary about Black business

MASSILLON – The Massillon Museum will screen the PBS documentary “Boss: The Black Experience in Business” at 2 p.m. Saturday in Gessner Hall. The film complements Massillon Museum’s 2024 NEA Big Read and this year’s book selection, “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi. The screening is free and open to everyone. To register, visit MassMu.org/Tickets.

Viewers will learn about African-American entrepreneurship, where skill, industriousness, ingenuity, and courage in the face of overwhelming odds contribute to the nation’s economic and social growth, according to a news release.

Each guest may pick up a free copy of “Homegoing” while the supply lasts. Massillon Museum’s NEA Big Read 2024 includes more than two dozen corresponding events. A bookmark listing dates and details is included in each copy of the book. For more information, visit MassillonMuseum.org/bigread.

Stark Scale Modelers Club model contest Saturday

TUSCARAWAS TWP. − The Stark Scale Modelers Club plans its annual model contest and swap meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Tuslaw Middle School, 1723 Manchester Ave. NW.

The show is a fundraiser for the Tuslaw boys' basketball program. The model theme for this year is the Chevy Chevelle, since this is the 60th anniversary of the Chevelle. There will also be a special class commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Pontiac GTO and Olds 442.

Model registration is 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $5 for the first model and $1 for each additional model, and the first 65 contestants entering a model will receive a free hobby-related goodie bag. There will be junior and adult divisions, with both Judge and People's Choice awards in all 19 model classes. Judging starts at noon, with awards presented at 3 p.m.

Admission is $4 per person and free for children younger than 12. Free admission for vendors and anyone entering a model. There will be hourly door prizes, concessions, raffle prizes, and the club's build-off will feature the new 2021 Ford Bronco kit.

Abortion-loss support for men is Wednesday

Arrows, an abortion-loss support group for men, will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The online group meets on the second Wednesday of each month. For the link and more information, call or text 330-834-8224. The support group is designed for men and led by men.

Stark Parks plans programs on eclipse, STEAM, gardening, archery

  • Towpath to Totality, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at St. Helena Heritage Park, Canal Fulton. Towpath to Totality is a family-friendly watch party in collaboration with the City of Canal Fulton.   • Leap for Life-FeLeap’s Birthday Party, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park. Stark Parks will celebrate the 28th birthday of its mascot, FeLeap the Frog. Enjoy games and see some of the ambassador animals up close. If you wish, bring a gift from a list of the Wildlife Conservation Center staff’s most-needed items as they prepare to feed more than 1,000 wildlife babies this season. Items include tissues, paper towels, jarred baby food (fruit or veggie), baby rice cereal, receiving blankets, and heating pads without an auto-shutoff.

  • Science and Nature STEAM Teens, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake. Learn what happens during a solar eclipse, watch videos, and make your own solar eclipse model. Pizza will be provided. The cost is $5 for in-county residents and $7 for out-of-county residents.

  • Backyard Habitat: Restoring Ecological Services with Native Plant Gardening, 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Exploration Gateway Center at Sippo Lake. A representative from Native Roots Nursery of Richfield will speak on your garden’s potential, how to select native plants that will benefit wildlife, and how to achieve the look you want. Registration is required for this free program.

  • Youth Archery, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake. This introductory-level archery program is for youth ages 10-17. All archery equipment will be provided for this class. The cost is $5 for in-county residents and $7 for out-of-county residents.
