Staff at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary work overtime to take care of animals after severe storm

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Staff at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary had a busy morning Wednesday following Tuesday’s severe storm.

The sanctuary received 40 animals all before 10 a.m. Wednesday, one of its largest intakes in some time. Some of the animals included birds, raccoons, and rabbits amongst others.

Curator with sanctuary Lori Bankson says, “There were a lot of high winds, rain, lightning too. We had a lot of nests that were blown out, a lot of birds that were blown into structures or into trees or even into the road and hit by a car, trees falling down, and just people being outside assessing the damage and seeing a lot of the animals out there.”

The sanctuary has an 80% release rate after nursing animals back to health but will be kept at the sanctuary if they cannot survive on their own. Even though the staff are working overtime to take care of all the animals, Bankson says they are happy to help.

“It means so much to us to work with the public to give these animals a chance, that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but concerned public found them, and that really makes a difference to us and to those animals,” she says.

Staff say if you see an animal in danger to call the sanctuary before getting close. Whether they are open or closed, their phone lines provide assistance around the clock.
