St. George leaders, Louisiana officials react to Supreme Court decision OKing new city

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The founders and creators of the city of St. George are celebrating Friday, April 26, following a Louisiana Supreme Court decision permitting them to incorporate.

They, along with Louisiana political leaders, are reacting to the news.

J. Andrew Murrell, the attorney representing the incorporators, held a news conference on Friday afternoon.

East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston-Broome also held a news conference on Friday. Broome was one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit seeking to keep St. George from splitting into its own city.

The petition was filed in 2018, and the subsequent lawsuit followed in 2019. Lower court decisions denied the incorporation. There were concerns that the new city couldn’t support necessary services. They also challenged the idea that a city-parish council member could contest the incorporation without living in St. George.

Louisiana Supreme Court: St. George can incorporate into new city, taxes can support services

The Supreme Court determined there was a legal error. They reversed the lower court’s ruling, allowing incorporation to proceed.

Murrell said they expect the process to take time and plan to work with the city-parish government on the transition.

Here’s how leaders in St. George, Louisiana are reacting to the news.

City founders and incorporators react

St. George posted several reactions to its Facebook page on Friday from founders and incorporators.

The incorporators promised to defend our election victory in the Louisiana courts. The legal fees exceeding $1.1 million were funded by voluntary contributions from ~800 residents and businesses. Of the ~800 donors, nearly 90% were senior citizens over the age of 50, that accounted for 98% of the financial contributions, who remained in EBR Parish and fought to create a better future for their children and grandchildren. The incorporators wish to publicly acknowledge the strong financial support from Eddie Rispone and Dan Heard.

More than 4.5 years and $250 million have been lost in establishing our new city. It is time to embrace our future with enthusiasm, and deliver on the promise of “Better Government, Local Control.” We extend an open invitation to neighborhoods and businesses contiguous to the city of St. George to be a part of the coming renaissance of East Baton Rouge Parish. We are open for growth and your business.

Only in America can we dream as big as we want to. The city of St. George has fledged, where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Fly. The challenges ahead requires the expertise of seasoned professionals and administrators with a proven track record of success to chart the path forward for our new municipality to quickly become the pacesetter city in EBR Parish and the state.

Today is not simply a historic day for St. George and East Baton Rouge Parish; today is a great day for America. This ruling brings with it not only a new city, but a beacon of hope that American citizens can band together to reinforce that democracy is still very much alive in this country. We have proven today and forever that a small group of committed citizens…that refuse to give up…that refuse to accept the status quo…can change the world!
