St. Francois County community rallying behind fire survivor
ST. FANCOIS COUNTY, Mo — A deadly fire in Valles Mines has generated a call for help from those who are learning the details of Monday’s tragedy. The blaze took the life of Jacob Bryan, 40. His mother, Catherine Bryan, survived but her home on Hillsboro Road is a loss.
“She had lost her husband back in November,” said Chief David Pratte, Big River Bonne Terre Fire Department. He hopes community members will respond to a GoFundMe effort to help.
“That’s what our communities are supposed to do,” said Pratte. “We’re supposed to help each other.”
The fire is under investigation but there were no signs of any suspicious causes, according to Pratte.
St. Francois County Ambulance District supervisor T.J. Isgrig was briefly on the scene of Monday’s fire. He is also hopeful community members will respond.
“She lost absolutely everything she has,” said Isgrig. “There was nothing left of the home or her contents.”
He said neighbors have rallied to help by collecting household items and finding a temporary apartment for Bryan. Isgrig said, “Hopefully that will pick up and they can get her the help that she needs.”
