St. Charles neighbors express safety concerns over dirt bike riders

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Some residents in a St. Charles community are upset over teens speeding through their neighborhood on dirt bikes.

St. Charles Police had several officers patrolling the Cambridge Crossing neighborhood Monday following a handful of complaints over safety concerns. The department tells FOX 2 that they are taking those complaints seriously.

Several neighbors told FOX 2 they are worried these kids are either going to end up hurting someone or themselves. Longtime Cambridge Crossing resident Karen Thornhill lives off of Cambridge Crossing Drive. She said neighbors have legitimate concerns.

“This is the main thoroughfare. Most people are already going too fast on here. But then there are people with kids walking. Kids get off school at 4, and if these people are flying up and down, there are kids coming home from school,” Thornhill said.

FOX 2 spotted one of the young riders Monday after police left the neighborhood, riding in the street wearing a helmet. Neighbors Shawn and Kelly Silvey said they’ve seen plenty without helmets. The couple said they are worried about safety: safety of younger kids walking home from school, safety of the drivers trying to avoid these dirt bikes, and safety for the riders themselves.

“With these kids out here, they think they’re invincible, and they can go 30–40 miles-per-hour in a 25-mile-per-hour zone without a helmet on,” Shawn Silvey said. “I mean, one of these days, it’s going to catch up to them.”

St. Charles County Police said while they are taking these complaints seriously, as of now they only amount to nuisance reports.
